Money gave me the freedom to leave a toxic job, travel to Europe, and launch my career as a financial advisor. When I set out to save $100,000, I was 22, living in Seattle in 2016 and making $55,000 at my first corporate job. Saving $100,000 was a combination of privilege and hard work. I felt confident I could launch a successful financial education platform and take my financial education business, "Her First $100k," full-time. I wouldn't have hit my $100,000 goal as quickly if I hadn't routinely invested in these accounts.

I shopped at Trader Joe's all the time as a busy student and I still go as an adult. Trader Joe's has excellent seasonal products and a great selection of flowers. AdvertisementFor years, I went to Trader Joe's for affordable staples, easy meals, and fun snacks when I was a busy, broke college student. Now, I officially fit some of the bill of an average Trader Joe's shopper — a college-educated person making over $80,000 a year. Here are some of my favorite things to buy at Trader Joe's.

Not having a car means I don't have to worry about having bills for car payments, gas, parking, and car insurance, not to mention regular and surprise maintenance costs. I spend a lot of time planning out my bus routes, especially to nearby cities. I see the bus ride as my third place, somewhere I can spend time doing things that make me happy. Learning the bus routes has also helped me explore neighborhoods in Seattle. And if I ever need a car ride, an occasional Uber ride is much cheaper than owning a car on my own.

As my living expenses have increased after moving from a condo to a townhouse , I've been assessing how I can spend with more intentionality. I've always prided myself in being somebody who frequently declutters my physical belongings, but four boxes of beauty and wellness products begged to differ. Going into 2024, here are four ways I'm making an effort to spend and save with more intentionality. In that time, I usually find that my desire to buy those items goes down significantly. I didn't grow up giving a lot of gifts, and I've never been excited about getting more things. I spend my gift giving budget on big experiences, like a trip to my fiancée's favorite Broadway show. I spend my money on a big experience instead of small giftsI take inspiration from my fiancée. I found a $99 flight to New York and got us tickets to see the Waitress together, which ended up being our last big trip before the pandemic. When the pandemic hit, I still wanted to provide special experiences for my fiancée.

For people of color, talking about money with a financial planner or money coach can be daunting. "If we don't talk about our money goals or wins, how can we view money as a tool?" Figure out what kind of help you're looking forFirst, ask yourself if you're looking for a financial advisor or money coach, or potentially both. Many financial advisors are fiduciaries, who are legally obligated to act in your financial interest.
